Our mission

Our Mission

In the wake of COVID-19, students across the country have faced an unprecedented setback. National test scores in reading and math have dropped to their lowest levels in decades, with the 2022 Nation’s Report Card showing the sharpest declines in over 30 years. Too many young learners are struggling to regain the critical thinking and problem-solving skills they lost during years of disruption, leaving a widening gap in both academics and confidence.

CheckMates is committed to changing that story. Chess is more than just a game: it is a training ground for the mind and a bridge to academic recovery. Every move builds focus, memory, resilience, and strategic thinking. By teaching students how to think several steps ahead, adapt under pressure, and work collaboratively, chess strengthens the very skills that academics demand.

Through our comprehensive chess education programs, we’re not just teaching students to play. We’re empowering them to think critically, solve problems creatively, and approach challenges with confidence. Our mission extends beyond the chessboard: we aim to close the learning gap created by COVID-19 and equip students with intellectual and social skills that will serve them throughout their academic journey and beyond.
